Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

What did you learn?

Harman: Understanding that the biggest barrier you face in life is yourself.

Emma: Dealing with people, facing obstacles, learning, work, and the scarcity time. It’s illuminating to see that a Roman emperor thought about a lot of the same things we do today. The world has significantly progressed since Marcus Aurelius' time, yet the basic characteristics of humanity that he reflects on remain the same and his words remain as relevant as ever.

Memorable Quotes

Harman: This letter complements the book’s philosophy.

Emma:

  • “Treat human beings as they deserve, be tolerant with others and strict with yourself.”

  • “Make time for yourself to learn something worthwhile; stop letting yourself be pulled in all directions… People who labor all their lives but have no purpose to direct every thought and impulse toward are wasting their time—even when hard at work.”

  • “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

  • “What injures the hive injures the bee.”
